Boiler control\/optimisation is high on the list of uptake energy efficient technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"602\" height=\"338\" src=\"http:\/\/gem.ie\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-778\" srcset=\"http:\/\/gem.ie\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/image.png 602w, http:\/\/gem.ie\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/image-480x270.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 602px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>THE PROBLEM:<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Quoted instantaneous and advertised combustion\nefficiencies (sometimes &gt;100%) do not take account of individual Boiler heat\nloss characteristics during Boiler rest cycles and Boilers can nuisance cycle\nalbeit with high combustion efficiency. Boilers can predictably cycle under low\nload conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Boilers which lack proper control will nuisance cycle on their own losses. Boiler nuisance cycling is a pervasive problem which often goes widely over-looked by design engineers and building stakeholders. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Boiler cascades and\/or condensing\/modulating boilers\nare only a part solution as low water content Boilers without thermal jackets\ncan rapid cycle on low load leading to failure of combustion components and\nincreased maintenance costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The problem can be compounded if off-line (lag) Boilers\nare not hydraulically isolated causing parasitic loads to appear on the lead Boiler\nthrough dilution losses in the primary circuit. Pre and post purge losses which\naccompany excessive Boiler cycling compound these losses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u2018Excessive boiler cycling can lead\nto early failure of boilers and increased energy use in buildings\u2019<\/em> <strong>Source:<\/strong> Damianos,\nDay Ratcliffe 2007.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Boiler nuisance cycling can be easily detected but\nunfortunately it goes widely over looked by the industry at large. Boiler\nsequencing through the BMS does not eliminate the problem. Significant savings\ncan be achieved with proper boiler load monitoring\/advanced boiler load control.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The elimination of the problem will insure optimum\nefficiencies, Co2 savings and the extension of Boiler plant lifecycles with\nreduced maintenance costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>THE SOLUTION<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>M2G represents a breakthrough in boiler load control for LTHW and MTHW systems. <strong>European Patent Number<\/strong> 1607820. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"403\" src=\"http:\/\/gem.ie\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-779\" srcset=\"http:\/\/gem.ie\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/image-1.png 600w, http:\/\/gem.ie\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/image-1-480x322.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 600px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>M2G has two digital temperature sensing probes which\nare attached externally to the each Boiler flow and return pipe-work manifold.\nThe M2G logic provides constant and dynamic monitoring (Movie) of each Boiler every\nsecond and references the boiler \u2018call for heat\u2019 and \u2018boiler off\/BMS satisfied\u2019\ntemperature set points (either variable or set, Boiler or BMS controlled). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>M2G places two independent default dead bands on the\nboiler of F8\u00b0C and R3\u00b0C. These are adjustable if required through\nthe Engineers Menu on designated boiler control terminal software through the\nexternal M2G RS232 interface. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The M2G algorithm will eliminate any response to\n\u2018boiler-only\u2019 heat loss which is not load-demand related. The M2G dead bands are\nbuilt on existing system set points are refreshed automatically for each and\nevery boiler cycle to identify any nuance in the Boiler or BMS set point\nstrategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Importantly, the normal cycle rate of the boiler is\nmatched by M2G during heavy load conditions. &nbsp;In contrast, M2G eliminates any attempt for the\nboilers to cycle as a result of&nbsp; <strong>1. Standing losses <\/strong>(i.e. convection\n&amp; radiation losses from the boiler at rest) or <strong>2.\nShort circuiting<\/strong> (i.e. temperature dilution from the lag boiler when\nit has not been hydraulically isolated) and <strong>3.<\/strong> <strong>Short Cycling<\/strong> (i.e. any boiler\nresponse to very low load leading to very short boiler run cycles). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Expected Savings:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Savings greater than 10% can be expected in addition\nto BMS (optimum start-stop, sequencing and weather compensation). Savings range\nfrom 6% - 25% depending on controls and system set up. M2G integrates\nseamlessly into the boiler\/BMS control circuitry on the interlock normally\nprovided by boiler manufacturers.
